Google My Business’s Latest Updates for the New Year

Published on January 15, 2024

The handy Google tool businesses have been using gets new updates in the new year. Here are a few.

New Branding and Redirection

If you are looking for Google My Business, you won’t find it anymore. The business tool was recently renamed Google Business Profile. Google is making a move toward positioning the Google Business Profile as a powerhouse to improve local businesses’ online presence. Businesses are able to manage their online presence, reach potential customers, get discovered, and continue communication with new customers. In addition, new features have been added to ease the way users access their profiles. https://www.semrush.com/blog/google-my-business/

Deep Customer Focus

Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business, aims to connect customers with businesses offering physical interaction. This focus ensures the relevance and usefulness of the information provided to customers searching for specific services or products in their local area. This is why a Google Business Profile is an integral piece of any local SEO strategy – especially for small businesses. It’s important to note that businesses which operate purely online without a physical location or direct customer interaction are typically not eligible for a Google Business Profile. There are also some interesting exceptions and strange edge cases. If you still have questions, check out Google’s business eligibility and ownership guidelines for more. In summary, the eligibility for a Google Business Profile is largely dependent on the nature of a business’s interaction with its customers. When thinking about your business’ Google Business Profile, you should be focusing on how to best serve your customers in your local area.

Direct GMB Management

This exciting new update allows users to make edits from a more visible location. Before, it was not as easy for users to access their Google Business Profile dashboard. Nikola Bojkov writes about the benefits of directly managing your profile. “With the recent update, Google pushes Google My Business’s most useful features to a more visible location – the search results page.  Previously it was harder to use the Google My Business dashboard from a desktop as its URL is longer and not that obvious, so most of the users trying to find this URL would type in Google search to get the URL from the SERP and again navigate to the actual Google My Business listing.” With this new update, you can access your GMB in Google Search and Maps.
